August 19, 2010What else is there to do besides eat?

I ate (mostly) clean today.  I did not eat any Oreo cookies.  The worst thing I ate were some peanut butter filled pretzels.  I consider this a victory.

I've been thinking though, of all those times when I can't think of anything I'd rather do than eat.  I thought it would be fun to compile a list of other things to do when you want to eat, even though you aren't hungry.

I'll start with ten things.  Will you add to my list?  Put them in the comments and let's see if we can think of one hundred Things to Do Besides Eat.

1)  Drink a giant glass of water.
2)  Chew gum.
3)  Take a walk, even if you only have time to circle the house or climb the stairs.
4)  Browse Amazon.com.
5)  Go outside and breathe some fresh air.
6)  Paint your fingernails hot pink.
7)  Read a magazine article.
8)  Watch Jersey Shore.
9)  Look at pictures of yourself when you looked cute.
10)  Send a friend an email.

What else can you do besides eat?  Add your ideas in the comments!  Please and thank you!

Get lost within internet window shopping - imagine how good those dresses will look when you just that little bit slimmer.

Breathe. Just breathe. Harder than it sounds.

It's dreary and rainy outside, and the night was more like a nap. So while I would love to eat (and yum to those peanut butter-filled pretzels!), taking a real nap sounds pretty good right now.

And I mean RIGHT NOW.

Zzzzzz....

1. Knit
2. Sew
3. Clean - especially something really gross so that you don't want to put your hands anywhere near your mouth when you're done
4. Telephone someone that would be appalled to hear you chewing while speaking
5. Record yourself reading aloud
6. Play a game with your kids (it's especially hard to eat while playing cat's cradle)
7. Balance your checkbook
8. Practice standing on your hands
9. Give yourself a pedicure
10. Start a load of laundry

I think the most important thing to do is keep yourself busy and eat complex carbs that will keep you full for the day. It's so easy to sit around the house and snack all day.

It's also a good idea to spend time with people who don't eat alot. That way you feel guilty when you're eating and they're not.

LOVE THESE!!! I'll add...

11) drink tea or water

Well if you would really rather not eat, then two things that would stop me are....
1) go to the closet and try on clothes in front of a full-length mirror

or

2) Egads! Call my mother. I know she loves me and is only looking out for me, but does "are you dieting" have to be within the first twenty words of our phone conversation?

www.amihungry.com has a list of 101 things to do instead of eating available. The site is about mindful eating. I have no affiliation - just found the list of 101 things helpful.

Have a cup of tea- I use stevia to make it sweet...when ever I find my inner voice saying that "I "need" a treat/cookie" I replace that with " you know what I need, I need a nice relaxing cup of tea" and then I spend some time figuring out what flavor would be most delightful, something friuty, or spicely, flowery, or smoky. Then as I fix my tea I remind myself how nurturing I am being.

My favorite things to do instead of eating mindlessly are: 1. phone a friend for a nice long chat; 2. go window shopping for new clothes in a store, or even buy things if I have extra money; 3. write a short story, or even start writing a book; 4. go to bed early; 5. look at house plans on the internet and daydream planning my dream home. Most of these work for me most of the time.

Knitting is a good one. Can't eat while you have busy hands.

- Read weight loss blogs
- Drink raspberry or orange herbal tea: no calories, but plenty of yummy flavor
- Drink green tea: not only no calories and yummy, but enhances fat burning
- Indulge any other compulsive behavior you have that isn't destructive (for me it would be something like organizing/straightening things)

Great idea making a list, I wonder if I would remember it though! Enjoying looking on your blog.

2. Clean out a junk drawer, closet or filing cabinet
3. Brush and floss your teeth
4. Call or email a friend
